A pub specialising in Devon Tapas
Our award-winning kitchen specialises in Devon small plates or 'tapas'. Our menu, benefits from a varied, choice of these 'Devon tapas' to suit various food likes, dietary requirements and that showcase the fabulous produce we have here on our door step in Devon. Head chef Alex Pallatt works closely with local suppliers, and wife Gill to ensure the tapas offerings are seasonal, using food stuff that is at it's best as and when it's available. Regular customers and locals all have their 'favourites' whilst still looking out for and enjoying the new additions and changes.
“Visited here with family and friends, we ordered the full 36 small plates off the menu. Absolutely delicious, there were 6 of us and not a lot was left. Compliments to the chefs, especially to the young kitchen staff and waiting staff, you all worked really hard on such a hot evening"

SHARING BOARD SUNDAY LUNCH
Sunday roast, traditional, and deeply rooted in British culture. We serve ours on sharing boards between you. Three different meats cooked on our solid fuel, hearth (an open fire). From spatchcock, moist roast chicken, to slow cooked shoulder of pork, with crackling, to top rump picanha of beef. If seasons and sourcing allows lamb, venison and turkey may appear. But always 3 available, you don’t choose your meat, you get all of them each! Or enjoy a vegetarian or vegan roast that is miles away from the traditional nut roast. Enjoy an ember baked aubergine steak, or Harissa roast squash. Whichever main you go for, they are accompanied by super, crispy roast potatoes and at least 5 different seasonal vegetables. All locally sourced; or sometimes, even grown right here in our own garden. Top it all off with tasty gravy with homegrown herbs and vegetable juices, and affordable.
“Just had an absolutely fantastic Sunday lunch at this lovely pub, very friendly & welcoming. 3 meat roast was lovely &the best pub roast potatoes ever. The Golden Arches apple pie was the best ever. A real must to visit-Vivienne"

THE HEARTH
The Heart of the Kitchen
Our wood burning hearth is our primary source of heat to cook with, and our wood-burning oven also doubles-up to produces the embers and coals for use under pan rings, grill, and stove top (self-producing charcoal). Some might think it mad, some might think it brave.
We just love it, and are proud of what we have converted to, using a more sustainable source of fuel. The wood comes from just up the road and is 80% kiln dried; can't get more local than that.
Following on from our lockdown takeaway menus; that took a weekly influence from world cuisines. Once a month the kitchen serves up a varied menu themed from flavours around the world. From the Mediterranean to an American Diner, always with a tapas, small plate style. Upcoming themes and dates are on our events page or social media channels. A great excuse to try new flavours and enjoy food from other cultures.
TAKEAWAY & GILLVEROO
Since the beginning of the pandemic the Black River Inn has been supporting the local community and surrounding area with a takeaway service. What started out as a small venture for the immediate locality, grew with each lockdown and escalated into a quite big catchment by lockdown 3. Gills' delivery service became aptly nicknamed Gilliveroo, and saw her delivering to households both within the village and further afield. Whilst chef Alex was busying himself creating takeaway menus to a different food style of a different country each week. Playing with flavour and what was available during the pandemic.
Today, a weekly family-style menu; 'Feed 4 for £20' is published for collection or eat in on a Thursday (subject to kitchen capacity); and on the occasional Friday, Saturday evenings, a one choice option is advertised for early evening collection. The popular 3 meat Sunday lunch continues to be one of the most successful takeaway options, saving on the many pans. Ordering ahead and booking collection slots is vital. Menus for takeaways are published on social media channels. Sunday lunch is bookable for takeaway by Saturday 8pm.
